“The value of Lurdes Mutola derives from her having overcome a whole history of obstacles. Suppose that Lurdes Mutola, instead of training seriously, would demand starting a few meters ahead of her opponents, arguing that she is poor and from a martyred country. Even if she would win, her victory would not have any value. The example seems ridiculous but it is this exercise of self-pity that we practice time and again. The solution for the disadvantaged is not asking for favors. It is fighting harder than others for a world where favors are no longer needed.”
