In 2008 a donor, Alexandra Harney, signed up her wedding’s registry to our Mais Escola Para Mim program through the GlobalGiving website. We thank her and her husband Colin Beere, for their support and philanthropy. A few photos of their wedding are available below. Here is what she wrote to us about why she decided to donate.
“We discovered “More School For Me” program on GlobalGiving.com when we were looking for an organization to support in lieu of wedding gifts. We had just returned from Mozambique, where my husband, a photographer, is taking pictures for a book on the country. We were so moved by the people of Mozambique. We were also struck by the urgent need for education, particularly in rural areas. This is true for both men and women, but particularly for women, who bear such a heavy burden. The women we met were often pregnant by the time they reached their teens, and spent their formative years caring for their families, rather than getting an education, despite their obvious curiosity and appetite for learning. The More School for Me program addressed this need in a thoughtful way. We were especially happy that it was run by the Lurdes Mutola Foundation, which as a local organization is clearly best equipped to understand the needs of the people it aims to help. Even better, GlobalGiving made it really easy for our wedding guests to donate to the program - which makes a big difference when you are trying to persuade friends and relatives from around the world to send money.”
UPDATE: Colin visited Magude in August 2009 for a upcoming book on Mozambique and took photos of the girls which are available in the photo gallery, thanks Colin!
