Press Release - Signing of agreement with Netherlands Embassy

• The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Lurdes Mutola Foundation signed a financing agreement which aims at expansion and extension of the Sport for Life project in the province of Nampula.
• The Sport for Life Project is a program supported by the Mozambican Government and implemented by the Lurdes Mutola Foundation in partnership with local youth and sports institutions in the target districts.
• Sport for Life Program is budgeted at EUR 700,000.00 (equivalent to 22,800,000.00 MT), and under the agreement,The Netherlands Embassy will contribute EUR 200,000.00 for the years 2009 to 2011 in the project, dedicated to expanding the program in Nampula. This project benefits from financial partners such as Oxfam Novib, who contributed EUR 400,000.00 and the Government of Mozambique will support the Foundation through the Sports Promotion Fund.

• With support from Oxfam Novib the Lurdes Mutola Foundation implemented the first and second phase of Sport for Life between 2006 and 2007, which focused on the formation, creation and publication of the coaches manual, as well as implementation of testing activities in Namacha and Gurue and practical use of the manual for education through sport.
• The project aims to expand the activities of Phase I and II, providing coaches with the skills to conduct training aimed to create a “role model” or as we say in Mozambique: a ´´Craque´´. This new phase will cover the rest of Gurue district, two more districts in Zambezia Province and two more in Nampula.
• The book includes essential topics such as: football, skills, communication skills, healthy living, drugs, and HIV / AIDS prevention. Understanding of these themes are the needed to become an all-around player: A ´´Craque´´ on and off the field.
• During the first phase of the program, 24 coaches were trained and supported to create the new star players, so that they can carry out sports activities in the community.
• Having Sport as a development tool, and also in the context of the broad program of support for the development of this beautiful country, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands decided to make an important contribution so that the activities of this project gradually reach more people in the districts of Mozambique, thereby contributing to better local development .

    Penso que a fundaçao lurdes mutola devia servir os interesses das camadas juvenis mais necessitadas em todo o pais. Nao deve ser uma fundaçao para apenas gentes das cidades em detrimento do campo. A patrona precisa de vir a Gaza e viajar para o seu interior e nao so, precisa de viver a realidade real do pais.
