It is the smallest province with a population of 1,098,846. It is divided into seven districts, specifically: Moamba, Boane, Magude, Matutuine, Namaacha, Manhiça and Marracuene. Its capital (Matola) has a population of 440,000 people and is the third city of Mozambique, after Maputo and Beira. The size of the province of Maputo is 26,000 km2, with a population density of 40 people per km2, the second highest density after the province of Nampula.

The province has the highest unemployment rate in the country (after the city of Maputo): 36% of the population is unemployed, compared to the country’s average of 19%. The province is a major commercial transport region, sharing borders with South Africa and Swaziland and providing port services to both countries. Conversely, these two neighbouring countries produce food products that support the needs of the southern half of Mozambique. The province suffers from cyclical drought and is constantly on top of the areas in need of food aid, with 10% of its population consistently at risk of suffering from malnutrition, and the province has the highest risk rate of the country.

Acting as corridor to countries with the highest prevalence rates of HIV / AIDS in the world, the province of Maputo shows the second highest HIV-positive rate for the age group of 15 to 49 years, estimated at 20.7%, following the province of Sofala.

The FLM has an ongoing project in the District of Moamba and District of Magude and already has worked and financed projects in the city of Matola.
