It is the second largest province after Zambézia province, with an estimated population of 3,861,347. The city of Nampula, the capital, is the third largest city in Mozambique with a population estimated at 303,346 people. The province is the seat of the northern economic zone. Through the port of Nacala, coal and other products are handled for export and its utilization rate makes it a strategically important port for the Mozambican economy.

The province has the second lowest HIV / AIDS prevalence rate, estimated at 9.2% of the population in the age group of 15-49 years. Meanwhile, the statistics of child health show that the lives of more than 19% of the children are at risk due to the low level of access to health services, in particular vaccination services.

The low unemployment rate (15.9%) justifies the high levels of agricultural production and low prevalence of famine. It is a province rarely affected by floods, droughts and cyclones, which have afflicted almost all other neighbouring provinces.

At present the FLM has no projects in this province.
