Sofala
Sofala is a coastal province which has the third largest population of the country, 1,715,557 people. Its capital (city of Beira) is the second largest city, with 550,000 inhabitants. The city has the highest HIV / AIDS prevalence rate of the country, estimated at 30% for the age group of 15-49 years. Overall, the province has the highest infection rate of all the provinces of Mozambique, namely 26.5% for the same age group.
The province produces much of the rice consumed in Mozambique, high quality shrimp and other sea products. While being the second largest port in Mozambique, the port of Beira is the main point of access to maritime transport to and from Zimbabwe. The city and the province function as a corridor, which is one of the ways in which the province generates a significant part of its income, although it is also the main reason for the highest HIV / AIDS prevalence rates. The Beira Corridor records much traffic for the transport of fuel and other essential goods via land to Zimbabwe.
The unemployment rate is 26.7%. Meanwhile, the level of education and school attendance is low, especially among girls. For example, a mere 3570 of the 7096 girls enrolled in the 7th grade entered the 8th grade in 2006, just above half, and this is the lowest rate in the country.
At present the FLM works in the city of Beira.
